Let’s Read

Let’s Read is an exciting initiative to promote reading with young children from birth to five years. Let’s Read aims to give children the skills they will need to learn to read when they start school. Watch the video about this award-winning program.

We thank the following sponsors for their support of the Let’s Read programs across the Wimmera:

The Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN has worked with partners to establish the Let’s Read program across all four shires in the Wimmera and Southern Mallee.  Maternal and Child Health Nurses across the region are on the front line in delivering the Let’s Read program. The program offers support and resources to parents when they attend their local Maternal and Child Health Centre. Parents are reminded of the importance of reading with children from the earliest possible age and children receive a book and resources when they visit their Maternal and Child Health Nurse at 3 months, 12 months, 18 months and 3.5 years.

The Let’s Read programs are a whole-of-community approach to improve literacy across the region. Schools, kindergartens, infant welfare centres, shire councils, libraries, health services, sponsors and the Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN have formed partnerships to establish a sustainable model to ensure that the Let’s Read program continues to support families with young children into the future.

Pop-up libraries are an exciting new initiative of the Let’s Read partnerships. Books are labelled with Let’s Read stickers and put into Let’s Read plastic tubs.  The pop-up libraries are situated in doctor’s waiting rooms, playgroups, MCH centres, Centrelink, Salvation Army, chemists, shops and other locations that families visit.  Families can borrow a book and keep it for as long as they like.

An exciting outdoors activity with a literacy focus for children and families has been established in Horsham. An adventure trail has been developed along the Wimmera River in Horsham where trees ‘read’ children’s stories and provide information about the surrounding environment.

This activity has been a joint project between Art Is…, Wimmera Regional Library, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority and Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN.

The activity involves using a map to identify several trees along the Wimmera River and, with the aid of a smartphone, listening to a recorded story as the ’trees tell tall tales’.

Download the adventure trail map, pack a picnic blanket and your smartphone and spend some time outdoors with your favourite children.

The Read to Me program provides books for children in out-of-home care. The objective of the program is to ensure that all pre-school children in out-of-home care receive a regular supply of books to build up their own personal library. The children receive a ten-book ‘start-up’ pack and then receive three books every quarter.  There are also literacy resources and games included in the program.  There is training available for the carers to support them to support the children’s literacy development.

This project has been developed by the Raising Literacy Australia Foundation and is currently delivered to all South Australian children in care.

The WSMLLEN is leading an initiative with the Department of Education and Training, Department of Health and Human Services, Uniting Wimmera, Goolum Goolum and other partners to implement the Read to Me project in the Wimmera.

Story Time is an early years literacy project which aims to improve children’s literacy by fostering an interest in reading. Local radio presenters were recorded reading popular children’s story books to raise awareness of the important role that bed-time stories play in the language development of children.
