Wimmera Health Care Group is the major specialist health referral centre for the Wimmera and Southern Mallee region of Victoria. They have campuses in Horsham and Dimboola and provide emergency and critical care services for adults and children.

KOORIE LIAISON OFFICER

The  WHCG Koori Hospital Liaison Officer:

  • facilitates access and availability of appropriate health care services and preventative health programs for Koori people
  • ensures that the services received by individual Koori patients presenting for treatment are appropriate to their needs
  • ensures that individual Koori patients are aware of alternate options available to them with regard to treatment and other health related matters;
  • serves as a resource person for clinical staff on Koori health issues
  • advises clinical staff on the special needs of Koori patients
  • promotes a holistic approach to health care that recognises environmental, economic and spiritual influences
  • liaises with other health care professionals regarding patient care issues
  • ensures appropriate support services are in place for Koori clients on their discharge from hospital.

Social Worker

The Social Work Department of Wimmera Health Care Group provides counselling and support for in-patients and their immediate families. Community members can also make an appointment to see the Social Worker. Sometimes an illness can lead to social, emotional, financial or practical problems in a person's life. Support and assistance can be given in a variety of areas including:

  • Adjusting to illness
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Loss and grief
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Relationships with family and friends
  • Stroke and cancer support for patient and family
  • Accommodation options at major hospitals for relatives
  • Legal issues, Information on Power of Attorney
  • Guardianship and administration support
  • General information on community resources and referral.
